Sunny Mid-March Thursday Attire. . .

My program director (chair) and I joked yesterday, at the start of a Zoom meeting, that both of us had worn real pants throughout the pandemic when the world, it seemed, conducted daily business online with only our upper bodies visible.  Assuming one even bothered to turn on his/her/their camera of course.

I then observed, before we got down to yesterday's business ourselves, that his claim would make a fantastic t-shirt slogan.  "I wore pants throughout the pandemic!"  Wish I'd thought of it myself in about 2022 as we emerged from the worst of it.  I might now be living on the proceeds in a quieter, less chaotic and bellicose part of the world.  Ahem.

Sartorial kidding aside, today's attire includes items from various merchants (the usual suspects), all of which combine easily to produce a not displeasing effect for late winter-early spring (though I'd still rather be skiing).  We're definitely in the shoulder season here in Mid-Michigan however.  Not quite cold enough for heavy tweed over crew neck sweaters, but nowhere near warm enough yet for cotton chinos, broadcloth, linen, silk, or hopsack weave blazers.

Parenthetically, the Young Master has decided, with all the wisdom of a typical 15-year old, to resume waiting for the school bus in the early mornings, when it is still quite cold, sans his heavy winter coat.  He wants to be a "hard guy" as we used to call 'em when I was his age 40+ years ago.  But I digress.

The belt for today is a chocolatey suede match for the shoes while the Merino wool dress socks feature a dark brown Fair Isle pattern.  Shirt and necktie today are J. Press (surprise, surprise) and I look forward to visiting their physical store once again when I stay with my sister, who lives just minutes away, while attending and presenting at a conference in Washington, D.C. during early June.  Perusing the J. Press website is fine, but it's no substitute for visiting a physical store where the employees on the floor are actually familiar with the items they sell.

  1. Hard to find a better customer service experience than in the D.C. J Press store. Was there in May during a business trip and was unsure of the pit-to-pit measurements between 16.5 and a 17. They spread out a shirt and measured it right there, even letting me do the same, for which my wife teased me with glee. JDV

  2. Agreed! Some of the nicest clothes-purchasing experiences I've experienced in a long, long time. Enjoy the day!

    Kind Regards,

All opinions are welcome here. Even those that differ from mine. But let's keep it clean and civil, please.

The Problem of "Business Casual" Attire. . .

This is how it's done.  Business Casual the RIGHT way, ladies and gentlemen.  Even during the summer months.  A photograph (taken by Studio B Portraits ) which appeared in 425 Business Magazine in May 2017.   T his post on the problem of business casual dress began as a quick postscript to a previous blog entry last week but quickly grew and grew as additional thoughts occurred, were developed in more detail, and revisions made.  So much so, that it seemed, eventually, like a better idea to make the initial P.S. afterthought into its own entry .  Are ya ready, Freddy?  Then, here we go. . .  ------------ U nless you actually plan to sell beach snacks and trinkets on Cozumel, become a serial barista, or greet customers at a fancy nightclub after taking out huge student loans to attend university somewhere for four or five years, plus an MBA afterward, it's really a better idea to err on the side of (somewhat) more formal work at...

Gabardine Tuesday. . .

A warm one here today, so I pulled out a linen, silk, and wool blend jacket along with a pair of lightweight gray gabardine pants that I have not worn in some time.  Not a bad look, but darker brown shoes and belt would have worked better I think.     It's easy to go wrong with tan shoes, and I strayed close to it here.  These work well in some contexts, but not this time around.     Ah, well.  Live and learn I suppose.   -- Heinz-Ulrich

Friday on Campus Style. . .

S omewhat atypically, I was on campus for several hours today helping with an interview that is part of a larger documentary project on which a colleague and I are working.  Although I am behind the camera (I'm the audio guy in fact), what better reason does one need to dress presentably?  Exactly.   Everything worn, barring the recently purchased University of Wisconsin socks, a gift from the Grand Duchess, has been in the rotation for a while now.  And, of course, there was the Panama hat, which I'll wear until we pass October 1st when the felt fedoras reappear. -- Heinz-Ulrich
