Mid-Summer Lawn & Garden Style. . .

Not without its problem spots due to tree roots, thin soil, and possibly 35-year old construction debris, but the front lawn looks pretty good in this photograph.  The large bed below the two trees at the upper left needs something done about it, but that will need to wait until cool weather.  I need to locate the paving stones around its edge and get the grass and ground cover off of them.

The rear lawn looks equally inviting although it too has quite a few problem spots that some professionally administered top dressing might help, but that will have to wait until next spring or possibly later.  Not sure if I want to undertake that particular task myself.

Still, the circular bed in the front lawn looks pretty good here.  The transplanted ornamental grass, which used to live around the mailbox, has taken to its new spot, the Marigolds are still blooming, and it shouldn't be too much longer before the Black-eyed Susans begin to flower.  We need to limit our plantings to things that deer are less inclined to eat.

Last of all, here's the freshly edged and cleared driveway.  Now, lots of suburban dads out there use gasoline-powered edgers or string trimmers, but I think an old-fashioned wheeled edging tool gives nicer results.  Awfully hard work though.  Ah!  I see that it's time to hit the cracks with the weed eater once again.

Just watchin' the grass grow for a little while this morning before returning to work-related activities of one sort or another.  Edging performed while wearing olive green chino shorts, a tucked in blue and white micro-square cotton twill shirt with short sleeves and button-down collar, a blue and red surcingle belt, and the usual well-worn leather dock-siders.

  1. Excellent work, H-U! Do you ever do landscaping for hire in Virginia? Your thumb is apparently greener than mine.

All opinions are welcome here. Even those that differ from mine. But let's keep it clean and civil, please.

Mid-June Thursday Style. . .

A nother pretty typical variation on the theme for late spring, summer, and very early fall.  I'm a huge fan of Madras and have several such shirts in the seasonal rotation.  Lightweight, exceedingly comfortable, and even dressy when pressed and tucked in, which is the usual way of things here at Totleigh in the Wold.   Now, if I had my druthers, I'd still rather be skiing the trails in the upper half of "The Mitten" (of Michigan), in the Upper Peninsula, or Ontario.  But summers ain't so bad either, and I'd look pretty funny walking around in cross-country ski attire during June. -- Heinz-Ulrich

A Lazy Saturday at the End of June. . .

A sleepy first half of the weekend here at Totleigh.  Warmer and quite humid ahead of an approaching cool front here in Mid-Michigan.  Perfect for yet another pair of chino shorts an a seersucker shirt -- tucked in of course -- with the usual leather deck shoes and ribbon belt.  Otherwise, not much accomplished beyond a page or so of writing and monkeying around with audio settings for an upcoming podcast episode.   However, I was not completely useless yesterday!  I made a huge fruit salad for dinner, which the Grand Duchess and I enjoyed a short while later at the table on the back porch.  The Young Master, as is his wont on Saturday evenings,  took his dinner on a tray in the TV room upstairs where he whiled away a couple of hours on Flight Simulator, flying some sort of commercial airliner to some destination across the Atlantic or Pacific.  I would have loved that sort of technology at about nine or 10 way back during the late 1970s, aka The Stone Age.  As it is, my sister and
