Annual Review Style. . .

 

The top half, featuring a nice combination of J. Press Shirt, Ben Silver necktie, and cotton Brooks Brothers jacket.  The latter two items have been in the rotation for the last eight to 10 years and appear frequently during the warmer months whenever I can find an excuse to dress.  The cotton pocket square from the folks at Put This On is seersucker and features various Hawaiian-themed motifs.


The bottom half, featuring some recently shined loafers that have appeared here on Classic Style often.  I am of two minds about shoeshines.  One the one hand, I really like a high gloss on the toes and heels of lace-up dress shoes.  For more casual shoes like loafers, though, a nice sheen like you get from buffing the moisturized leather with a horsehair shoe brush, one of my late maternal grandfather's, is hard to beat.


And the socks!  Cotton to-the-knee from Dapper Classics of course. 

Keeping the faith here today at Totleigh-in-the-Wold, dressing presentably for the two halves of my life.  The professional half saw an online meeting for the ol' annual review, which went swimmingly.  Probably the most relaxed and enjoyable such session I've ever experienced.  A very pleasant hour talking with my chair about where I've been and where I see my career heading in the next year.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end.  Next up this afternoon, mowing the lawn before rain moves in for several days starting tomorrow if the weather forecast holds,  So, I've swapped the above duds for some attire more suited to the outdoors. In this case, one of several pairs of khaki shorts, an olive surcingle belt, a near 25-year old pique knit polo top with vertical bars of color, and the ubiquitous Sebago topsiders.

Hey, even if we've reached the season where suits, jackets, and neckties remain in the closet until late August, there's no reason why a guy can't look presentable.  Relaxed and summery, sure.  But presentable nonetheless.

SUBURBAN. . . dad strikes again!  My alter ego uses a blend of mowing twice a week at about 3 inches, Anderson's PGF Complete and Anderson's Humichar three or four times a season for this thick, green lawn.  Occasional spot watering helps too, but it has been dry this spring, and we do not have an irrigation system, so it will not look quite this good for much longer.

Four Little Words. . .

  R egardless of the cut of one's sports jacket, odd pants, suit, or shirt collar, four key words spring to mind when it comes to being intentional about our attire, personal habits, daily interactions and so much else.  Here they are: Polish -- Good manners and ease with people. Sophistication --  Refinement, good taste, and subtlety in not only a social context but also the cultural and intellectual senses . Finesse --  Sensibility, grace, and social competence. Awareness -- Perspective, empathy, and emotional intelligence    And my point?  We should strive to cultivate these qualities in ourselves with (more) conscious intent.  More of the four within and from everyone would make the world in 2024 a far more pleasant place in which to live and operate.  Best of all, these four things cost nothing, making them accessible to everyone regardless of education level or income bracket. -- Heinz-Ulrich

Friday Breakfast Style. . .

  N ow and again, the Grand Duchess and I manage to find the time for an adults' breakfast out on Friday mornings once the Young Master has climbed aboard the school bus.  Today was the first such outing in quite some time, and we visited our favorite quick and greasy about 10 minute up the road.   Since I've got a couple of Zoom meetings midday and in the early afternoon, I opted for a sports jacket over an OCBD shirt rather than the more typical Rugby top or flannel shirt.  Hey, it's still quite chilly here in the mornings. -- Heinz-Ulrich
