Saturday Podcast Style. . .

 


Three hours today (Saturday) down here in Zum Stollenkeller finishing a script, recording, and adding post-production to a podcast that I hope will help support my students' efforts in the two courses I'll teach this fall and later.  Very casual, yet a nice, muted mix of colors.  

The L.L. Bean polo shirt is just about the same shade as the t-shirts we used to get at my old YMCA summer camp outside Reading Pennsylvania, Camp Conrad Weiser.  Still in operation, but co-ed since about 1982 or '83.  

I am sure things are very different now from when I was a camper, but lots of wonderful memories of summers there during the latter half of the 70s and into the very early 80s.  A much simpler time.

In any case, my son, The Young Master, has a similar green polo shirt in a smaller size, which we ordered for him in the spring.  Growth during the colder months meant he needed a few new things to get comfortably through the summer and into the early fall.  The green looked so nice on him that I ordered one myself.

Alas, the  men's large in this shade of green was out of stock, so my shirt only arrived a couple of days ago. Still, better late than never.  We can often get away with summer casual gear at home until well into September, and occasionally the warmer October afternoon during the first half of that month.  So, there is still some time to enjoy the new shirt.

Otherwise, I am looking very forward to picking up that new J. Press sports jacket in navy plaid from the tailor's next week as well as getting back into more professional attire Monday through Friday.  Casual attire is nice, but the novelty of it wears off by the time we reach the latter half of August each year.  

Like many in the online traditional menswear community, my mind turns to tweeds, corduroys, and wool flannel suits as the cooler/cold months approach.  Ahhhhh. . .

Mid-November Monday. . .

A few minutes between classes this morning, so I snapped  pictures of today's attire and accessories.  The first wearing this season of the Optimo 'Dearborn' fedora, and the tie is a vintage number from Orvis, a nod to my late father's fly-fishing and fly-tying hobbies.  It's been two or three years since this particular necktie's last appearance, so high time to pull it out and knot it carefully around the ol' neck.  Managed to nail it on the first attempt too.  Could this be the start of a trend? -- Heinz-Ulrich

The Problem of "Business Casual" Attire. . .

My Preferred Oxford Cloth Button-Down Shirts. . .

One of several light blue cotton oxford cloth button-down collar shirts in my rotation, worn here with a wool flannel navy blazer and a vintage Italian silk necktie once sold under the Rooster label.  An orange-brown with silvery paisleys, ideal for the autumn. T he other day, a regular visitor to Classic Style for the Average Guy left a comment in which he asked for information and my recommendations on the classic oxford cloth button-down shirt, commonly abbreviated to 'ocbd.'  "Me?  Are you tawkin' to me?"   Oblique Robert DeNiro references aside, let's talk oxford cloth button-down shirts.  This particular type of shirt is one of the bedrock items every man should have a few of hanging in his closet, especially when he wishes to present himself to the world in a way better -- yes, I said better -- than what has become the sad accepted average among so much of the male populace.   First things first though.  Lots of people automatically...
