"Kids, how was the clambake?" my maternal grandfather always used to ask my sister and me, usually just before the family sat down to the dinner table in the evenings. He was asking about our school day in his semi-humorous way of course.
You don't realize how significant those kinds of happy interactions were until many years later. I often think back and chuckle about a near-idyllic life with our grandparents outside of Philadelphia in the 1970s, 80s, and into the very early 90s. Especially when the fall semester starts up in late August each year for some reason.
Oddly, it has felt, without a doubt, like fall here in Mid-Michigan since mid-August, with temperatures in the 70s F. during the day and even the upper 60s (yesterday and today) with sunshine, occasional clouds, intermittent rain, and breezy spells. Late September arrived about seven weeks early it seems.
And I actually observed, while on an evening walk around the neighborhood, a V of Canada Geese flying in a southerly direction just after July 15th! They must know something we don't.
In any case, the attire for today consists of more J. Press gear, including the blazer and Nantucket Red pants (I know, I know.) combined with items from other sellers. The pants admittedly are more than a bit outre for Michigan, but I like 'em all the same. A bit of sartorial fun and refreshingly different from the usual khaki or gabardine trousers in various earth tones that I sport until chilly weather sets in, and with it the reappearance of tweed, flannel, and (at times) colorful corduroy.
