Classic Style

  S topped for my usual large mug of fresh coffee on the way to campus early this morning and took the opportunity to document today's attire.  Not a bad look overall I think.  Cooler and more comfortable here in Mid-Michigan.  Seasonal but not quite flannel and corduroy weather just yet although I have made the switch to a fedora since we're into October.  My chocolate brown 'Dearborn' from Optimo Hats of Chicago, a birthday present 10 years ago from good 'ol Mom. -- Heinz-Ulrich

  N o classes on Fridays, but an online meeting with a student who is having problems with her learning team (just hours ahead of a collaborative project deadline. . . of course) and several errands out and about.  Cooler and seasonal but very sunny, so why not doll it up a a bit as is my wont?  A pleasing combination of items in my view.  The belt was my brown, braided number, which I usually wear with this pair of shoes. -- Heinz Ulrich

  S topped off along the way to campus very early this morning for a large mug of fresh dark roast to steel myself for an 8am class.  And took the opportunity to snap the photographs of today's attire.  Given the sunshine and warmth predicted, I opted for a tan cotton suit and lighter weight cotton shirt.   The Allen Edmonds shoes (the Byron model), not seen anywhere on this blog before today, are lighter brown and less reddish than they appear in the picture.  Still, it was not a bad look overall I think.  Not shown are the usual Panama hat and a pair of vintage Polo braces in lieu of a belt. In other sartorial news (?!), I have a recently acquired double-breasted number in Prince of Wales plaid from J. Press, but I've had a hell of a time getting my tailor to take care of an alteration or two to his usual standard.  Distracted maybe?   In any case, I've got to drop it off again tomorrow to undo some previous work and start again.   Y ep. That's MEETINGS with an 'S.'  Around these parts, Fridays are a big day for department, collage, and university-level meetings.   Sigh. Not the most riveting way, admittedly, to wind down the week and sail into the weekend.  So why not glam it up a bit to get through what can be, if we're brutally honest, a trail under the best of circumstances?   Bright sunshine here today in Mid-Michigan but very comfortable, even seasonable cool temperatures.  The belt matched the tan monkstrap loafers while the socks were navy cotton featuring a subtle  pattern.  Happy Friday indeed. The trip home early this afternoon was a bit more interesting in that I stopped by my tailor of longstanding to get measured for a few of the usual alterations to a new suit.  A double-breasted number in Prince-of-Wales plaid.  Should be ready in about a week.  Yes! -- Heinz-Ulrich

U p and at 'em very early yesterday (Tuesday) to prepare for my Tuesday course meetings (that's "classes" in everyday student parlance), starting at 8am.   Cooler and rainy at times, but I opted for a cotton single-breasted suit in dark olive along with Panama hat and trench coat without the liner.   Seemed to work pretty well, and I managed to avoid most of the sporadic heavier rain as I moved between buildings on campus.  A few people even offered their kind remarks about both suit and orange Swims overshoes (not pictured).   As I always say, compliments are never necessary, but it's always nice when they are offered.  Clearly people, even young ones, appreciate a reasonably well-attired man.  Hat not withstanding of course.  ;-) -- Heinz-Ulrich

  I magine!  Wearing seersusker and Madras AFTER the Labor Day weekend.  The unmitigated nerve! But several students and faculty passersby offered their compliments as I moved through day.  Never necessary, of course, but always nice to hear.  The shoes are not as red as they appear here.  In real life they are a darker tan.  Worn with a matching belt of course. Both suit and tie are vintage items.  The latter hails originally from a Carol Reed Ski Shop in New Hampshire.  How on Earth it found its way to a thrift/charity store in Central Illinois, where I purchased it for a song 12 or 13 years ago, is anybody's guess. The real deal.  Made in Sri Lanka.   K ind of a loony last couple of weeks with the usual start-of-classes for everyone business complicated by a local power and internet outage that last four days over most of the Labor Day holiday weekend here in the US. The result of an apparent tornado that touched down east of us but close enough to take down many large trees and power lines across two power grids in the area.  [Come to learn, that it was actually something called a downburst .] Keep in mind, our local storm sirens never sounded, and the weather radio, which we were listening to in the kitchen, never mentioned taking shelter in the East Lansing area.  Hmm.  We later figured straight line winds, but apparently it  was a tornado.  The resulting power outage was challenging despite a generator in the garage and two Jackery rechargable generators for the kitchen and related limited use situations.   L ate yesterday (Friday) afternoon, I taught the almost 17-year-old Young Master a valuable life skill.  He learned to to make hamburger patties, prepare and fire up the Weber grill, and cook the meat to medium-well done perfection.   He has also recently asked me if we could get him a new suit since he has grown too tall for the one given to him by a family friend a year ago.   Paul currently wears a 40R (my size) in the sleeves and shoulders although the rest of him is still quite slim.   I've told him that we'll see how tall he gets in the next few months and then move forward on that. Both the Grand Duchess and I have relatives who tower well over six feet, so our progeny could also reach such heights before he finishes growing. Anyway, while we monitored the cooking hamburgers yesterday, he asked me for a new pair of leather dress shoes.  Not loafers this time but lace-up dress oxfords.   "Like yours, Dad." Good man!   S napped these two shots earlier this morning just before hopping in the car to retrieve my larger lawnmower from the repair shop.  The shirt has been in the rotation since May 1999 when I packed up my apartment in Madison after five incredible years and headed to Norway later that summer on a Fulbright Scholarship.   Good ol' Mom ran into the University Shop on our way to a celebretory dinner at the long gone Husnu's (Turkish) restaurant along State Street, and emerged with this shirt and a yellow cheesehead, which occupies a place of honor here in my office at home.  It sat on my desk in Folwell Hall during my later Ph.D. work (and teaching Norwegian 1001 and 1002) at the University of Minnesota.   I have assembled the last two pieces of flat-pack furniture.  EVER.  Two all-weather Adirondack chairs from LL Bean, part of my 20th anniversary gift to the Grand Duchess.  The od wooden ones have become rickety, and their replacements arrived after the date at the end of June. Yours truly has finally managed to open both packages, sort through the various pieces, hardware, and get 'em put together without too much blue language clouding the air.   But Jeeze Louise!  In any case, the new chairs will go on the un-screened part of our back porch to enjoy early in the late spring and summer evenings before the biting insects emerge, and we move into the screened part of the space. -- Heinz-Ulrich

 

  D eep in the throes of summer here in the Grand Duchy. The faded Nantucket Red shorts have been in the rotation since at least 2011 if not 2010.  The shirt about three years by contrast.  You'll pardon the pale, skipole legs I trust.  The shirt's dark green color is very close to the t-shirts presented to campers every year at my summer camp alma mater, Camp Conrad Weiser -- "Keep the Fires Burning!" -- atop South Mountain outside of Reading, Pennsylvania, which I attended for five glorious summers from the mid-1970s into the early 80s when other interests took hold.   Among all of the boys and men in those days (the camp went co-ed in about 1982 or '83), we always had a large compliment of counselors and campers from various countries around the world, including Japan, South Korea, Germany, Denmark, France, Britain, Columbia, various sub-Saharan African countries, and India besides the U.S. It was (and is) amazing how quickly you make friends at that age...

  R ecently , I treated myself to a bottle of Royall Mandarin aftershave, something I've meant to do for a few years.  And I was not disappointed.   The aroma is light and, while there is a very slight note of citrus, it's more something I can't quite put my finger on.  Best of all, it's not a scent that will cause people to wrinkle their noses from across the room as you enter.  Know what I mean?  At any rate, if you are seeking a warm weather scent, and change of pace, give it a try.  Like all others in the Royall line, it is delightfully masculine and uncommon. -- Heinz-Ulrich

  S ince the Young Master and Grand Duchess were away over the recent July 4th holiday, visiting family in Germany, we celebrated with the obligatory cookout yesterday (Sunday) evening.  Long a difficult eater, the Young Master has recently decided that he once again enjoys the occasional hamburger, steak, or bratwurst done on the Weber grill, which is what I am supervising in the photographs.   Father and son have a date for this coming Saturday for another pedagogical moment, in which I'll walk him through the grilling of hamburgers after we've made and marinated the patties in the kitchen.  In the meantime, the Young Master began his first paying job today, helping out at our local zoo.  He was excited early this morning since that was the job he most wanted.  Good man! By the way, the shirt above was tucked in, as is my usual practice with Madras and twill sport shirts during the warmer months.  The khaki shorts were worn with one of now seven...

  M uch like climbing into a bed made up with freshly laundered and folded sheets -- The beds my maternal grandmother (a southern transplant) had waiting for us when we visited as children were unequaled. -- there is nothing quite like slipping on a pair of fresh (or in this case new) pajamas. The example above was given to me recently by the Grand Duchess and Young Master for Father's Day a week ago, but I delayed wearing them until this morning.  Soft, airy, and pleasing to the eye.  Perfect for Sunday morning coffee on a quiet, sunny summer's day. Petite Plume for those interested.  The name is unfortunate, and clearly geared toward the ladies' items sold by the company, but they also sell some very nice sleepwear for men.  As does Cordings . -- Heinz-Ulrich

  V arious old friends reappear for this calm first day of Summer 2026 (on this side of the equator).  You can just about make out the ear of Lord Onyx, out old neutered tomcat, who loves to sit for hours purring on the back of my desk chair with a paw or his head resting on my left shoulder.  I suppose this is a holdover from when he was a kitten, and it took him six weeks to warm up following adoption from the animal shelter. He spent most of that time petrified and looking fearful in my lap with his sister, who was the complete opposite.  Gunnlaug warmed up immediately and purred as soon as we met them for the first time at the shelter.  Well, we couldn't just adopt the one cat, could we? -- Heinz-Ulrich

  N ot my vintage seersucker suit, unfortunately, but a recently acquired pair of shorts.  Complete with rumpled, slightly furry and dandruffy short-sleeved polo shirt thanks to an hour long visit from our aging neutered tomcat Onyx, who, I am quite convinced, would spend all of his time in my lap if permitted.  Or held while he rests his head and one paw on my left shoulder and purrs. -- Heinz-Ulrich

  S ince finishing that BIG project at the very end of May -- a few days ahead of the June 1st deadline, thank you very much -- I've been full on into late spring-early summer mode, catching up with flower bed maintenance, planting of annuals, mowing, and the like.  All of that Suburban. . .  dad (lower case "d" intentional) stuff.   Just about done now remulching a large bed that goes across the rear of the house, but I managed to spread 16 bags of the stuff yesterday (Saturday) afternoon among other tasks.  Then, time for a shower and clean clothes ahead of dinner on the screened-in back porch where we spend much of our time from May through September each year.   The uncooperative seersucker shirt is usually not quite so billowy when tucked in, but there we are.  Proof positive, nonetheless, that an adult male can be casual and feel comfortable when at home during the warmer stretch of the year without looking like he has oozed from beneat...

A fter the Young Master climbed aboard the school bus early this Friday morning, I poured a second mug of coffee, headed upstairs, and hit the shower, followed by a shave. I next dressed for a day spent with the Grand Duchess in nearby Ann Arbor. The city -- with its fantastic bookstores, array of charming cafes and restaurants, along with various other specialty establishments -- provides a lovely escape from East Lansing where we largely have very little like that.  Odd for a school of this size and its adjacent areas, but there we are. Although both institutions (with surrounding communities) are part of the original Big 10, and both have Research 1 status, the difference between the two is like night and day.   That's a topic for another time however.   S aturday.  A 10:30 breakfast with the Young Master.  Canteloup, a large mug of fresh coffee, and two slices of toasted raisin bread.  Clear table.  Brush teeth.  Shower.  Dress for the day.  Finish with a small splash of Royall Rugby.   All ready to answer the door should anyone ring the bell and run a quick errand to the supermarket. Followed by some much needed downtime at the painting table adding to the toy soldier collection.   What a nerd!   But a presentably attired nerd. -- Heinz-Ulrich
