Another variation of the green and tan that work so well together. Today's attire taken for a very warm and humid spin around the neighborhood following the evening meal and coffee. |
I spoke this afternoon via a Zoom call to my maternal uncle, who lives outside of Providence, Rhode Island. A retired professor of Theology and Philosophy (one of the family's genuine ivy leaguers), he is well into his late 70s now and struggling with a variety of health issues. But he continues reading subjects that interest him.
Of particular note, Uncle David is teaching himself Danish to read Kirkegaard in the original, takes the occasional online graduate course in Philosophy, and somehow manages to maintain a positive attitude about everything happening in the world. And on a more personal level. The fact that he was in younger days also an Episcopal (Anglican) priest in the U.K. and here in the U.S. might have something to do with that.
At any rate, we began our catch-up session, and quickly discovered that we were dressed almost identically right down to the khaki shorts and leather deck shoes. Although his short-sleeved polo top was navy blue. But otherwise the uniform was remarkably the same. As I laughed and quipped in reply at the time, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Given the family's southern (North Carolina) and mid-Atlantic (Pennsylvania) origins, a gentle reminder that New England does not necessarily have a corner on what has been referred to -- depending on writer, audience, and context -- as ivy, preppy, or trad style. I simply prefer the adjectives understated, tasteful, classic, and timeless.
