Flannel Three-Piece Monday. . .


 

In my own personal Groundhog Day moment, I turned 29 yet again on Monday, November 6rh.  To mark the occasion, and celebrate (?!) "a certain age" receding another year further into the rear view mirror of life, I took the opportunity to don this wool flannel three-piece from Polo for the first time this season.

It was rainy and blustery yesterday, so besides my Borsalino fedora, I tossed on a taupe trenchcoat before heading out the frontdoor to the car.  Phillip Marlowe, or Sam Spade?  Who can say?  But it's not like most people crossing my path yesterday would know the difference.  I'm just some weird guy wearing a suit in 2023 when almost no one else here in Michigan does.

But what about the suit?

I purchased it for a song about nine or 10 years ago in our old stomping ground of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, where I spotted it in one of the thrift/charity shops I used to peruse now and then.  A 40R, it fit as though it were made for me when I tried it one.  

The only alterations necessary were made some years later, after I shed all of that weight during Fall 2020=Spring 2022..  Still fits like a dream, is wonderfully warm in cooler weather, and as comfortable as sitting around in pajamas and a robe.  But pressed.  

Of course.

    Great outfit H-U. I have a 2-piece, 3/2 suit in what looks like the same wonderfully soft chalk-stripe flannel, also from Polo Ralph Lauren. I got mine at the Madison Avenue flagship store around 20 years ago at the end-of season sale for less than half of its full retail price. It should be cool enough to wear it down here in Virginia by the weekend.

    Isn't it wonderful how good quality clothing holds up for decades? And I imagine you still get compliments on it, even if too few contemporary men follow your sartorial example.

    Thank you, Charlottesville! Indeed. It is always a fun surprise to rediscover comfortable old friends when the seasons change and various pieces of attire are brought out of storage. I hope your weather in VA cools enough to enjoy your own flannel suit(s) shortly.

Mid-November Monday. . .

A few minutes between classes this morning, so I snapped  pictures of today's attire and accessories.  The first wearing this season of the Optimo 'Dearborn' fedora, and the tie is a vintage number from Orvis, a nod to my late father's fly-fishing and fly-tying hobbies.  It's been two or three years since this particular necktie's last appearance, so high time to pull it out and knot it carefully around the ol' neck.  Managed to nail it on the first attempt too.  Could this be the start of a trend? -- Heinz-Ulrich

My Preferred Oxford Cloth Button-Down Shirts. . .

One of several light blue cotton oxford cloth button-down collar shirts in my rotation, worn here with a wool flannel navy blazer and a vintage Italian silk necktie once sold under the Rooster label.  An orange-brown with silvery paisleys, ideal for the autumn.
