Father-Son Style. . .

 


Late yesterday (Friday) afternoon, I taught the almost 17-year-old Young Master a valuable life skill.  He learned to to make hamburger patties, prepare and fire up the Weber grill, and cook the meat to medium-well done perfection.  

He has also recently asked me if we could get him a new suit since he has grown too tall for the one given to him by a family friend a year ago.  Paul currently wears a 40R (my size) in the sleeves and shoulders although the rest of him is still quite slim.  

I've told him that we'll see how tall he gets in the next few months and then move forward on that. Both the Grand Duchess and I have relatives who tower well over six feet, so our progeny could also reach such heights before he finishes growing.

Anyway, while we monitored the cooking hamburgers yesterday, he asked me for a new pair of leather dress shoes.  Not loafers this time but lace-up dress oxfords.  

"Like yours, Dad." Good man!

On a final sartorial note, Paul had a mock job interview a week ago as part of a summer job program he has participated in this year. He has cared for the goats and [with zookeeper help] a snow leopard at our local zoo among other duties.  Although not required, he quietly decided to take his light blue university stripe OCBD shirt, navy blazer, and khakis to change into  once his shift ended ahead of his subsequent interview time that afternoon. Penny loafers, a braided leather belt, and one of his repp stripe neckties rounded out the ensemble.  

All his own forethought and planning. 

Young Paul's combination of how he handled himself during the conversation and his interview attire bowled 'em over.  To the extent that they called us later that day to relay the very favorable impression he made.  

My mission is almost complete.

    The mission is yet ongoing, of course, but it sounds like you and the Grand Duchess are doing lots of things right. Thanks for passing along the tradition, not just of appropriate style, but manners and excellence!

Mid-November Monday. . .

A few minutes between classes this morning, so I snapped  pictures of today's attire and accessories.  The first wearing this season of the Optimo 'Dearborn' fedora, and the tie is a vintage number from Orvis, a nod to my late father's fly-fishing and fly-tying hobbies.  It's been two or three years since this particular necktie's last appearance, so high time to pull it out and knot it carefully around the ol' neck.  Managed to nail it on the first attempt too.  Could this be the start of a trend? -- Heinz-Ulrich

My Preferred Oxford Cloth Button-Down Shirts. . .

One of several light blue cotton oxford cloth button-down collar shirts in my rotation, worn here with a wool flannel navy blazer and a vintage Italian silk necktie once sold under the Rooster label.  An orange-brown with silvery paisleys, ideal for the autumn.
